Mission
The Downtown Women’s Center (DWC) envisions just, safe communities where every woman and gender diverse individual has a home and is on a path to fulfillment. Their mission is to end homelessness for women and gender diverse individuals by providing safe housing and supportive services centered on wellness, employment, and advocacy.
What they do
The Downtown Women’s Center serves women and gender diverse individuals through their housing first, trauma informed service model.** The organization operates housing, wellness, employment, and advocacy programs, with the goals of guiding individuals to personal stability and ending homelessness for women in LA. DWC provides housing to those in need by connecting women with DWC owned housing as well as community-based housing throughout LA County. DWC also operates a Workforce Development Program that supports women on their journey to employment. In addition to these programs, DWC operates a Day Center, where individuals have access to basic needs and resources, such as daily meals, showers, restrooms, laundry, and phones.
**This means that DWC believes housing is a human right and that people require food, shelter, and safety to have a stable life. To learn more about the housing first model, click here.
Why I Love This Organization
DWC recognizes that women face unique obstacles in their path to stability. Women have specific needs for healthcare and job training and are more likely to have survived violence than men. DWC aims to identify and meet the specific needs of women, leading to better care for women in need.
